ESP Lesson

One of the English teaching formats is for specialized vocabulary sets.  The teacher goes into business and teaches only contextual vocabulary.  I would LOVE to do that!  This is one of the assignments we had to do for English for Specific Purposes.

T-shirt Shop Salesman

Clerk: Hello, welcome to my shop.  How may I help you?

Dave:  I am looking for souvenir t-shirts for my family back home.

Clerk:  I am happy to help you.  How many t-shirts do you need?

Dave:  I need 3 children’s shirts and 2 adult-sized shirts.

Clerk:  Okay, first lets look in the children’s section.  What colors and designs do you like best?

Dave:  I like the Pura Vida design in pink for my 2 daughters and the sloth design in green for my son.

Clerk:  Perfect:  What sizes do you need?

Dave:  I need 2 smalls for my daughters and a large for my son.

Clerk:  Here are the children’s t-shirts.  Now, which ones would you like in adult sizes?

Dave:  I will take a medium, yellow and large, blue with the waterfall design for my wife and I.

Clerk:  Great!  I will bag those for you.  Your total is $50.00.  Thank you so much for your business.
Dave:  Thank you and enjoy your day.

Structured Activities

1)   Speech Bubble Match-up:  Students will place speech bubbles with appropriate questions and answers next to the person/picture who would logically make the statement.  E.g.  “What size t-shirt do you need?”  would logically go next to the clerk.  “I need a size medium.” Would logically go next to the customer.
2)   Make it and Take it:  Students will grab the parts of sentences taped from the wall and logically arrange them in order.  They will then draw an appropriate picture next to each sentence.  E.g. The parts of a sentence could be…The lady + wants + to buy + 3 + long-sleeved + yellow + t-shirts.  The student would then depict the sentence.
3)   Dialogue Scramble:  Students will be given 2 dialogues cut into strips and mixed together.  They will unscramble and place them in logical order.

Less Structured Activities:

1)   T-shirt Wall Graffiti:  Students will use wall graffiti to fill in the missing parts of questions and answers.  Paper t-shirts, some with words and some blank ones, will taped on the wall. Students will use those words to form questions, filling in any missing words.  They will then write an original answer to the question.   E.g. Are you looking for a medium or large t-shirt?  I am looking for a large women’s t-shirt.
2)   Board Game:  Student will ask or answer questions according to the place they land on a board game.  E.g. If they land on a blue t-shirt with a question mark they would say, “Would you like a large blue t-shirt?”  If they land on a t-shirt with a sloth design and no question mark, they would answer, “I need a small, green t-shirt with the sloth design”.

Open: Role Play

Describe the T-shirt: Students will receive several paper t-shirts.  Each t-shirt will have a size, color, design and either be short or long-sleeved.  In pairs, the students will ask each other what kind of t-shirt they want/need and answer the questions according to their paper t-shirts. E.g. What size t-shirt do you need? Do you need a long-sleeved or short-sleeved t-shirt? I need a small, pink, short-sleeved t-shirt with a parrot design.
